How these tools work

Some run entirely on your device and some need a server. Knowing which is which tells you what happens to your file.

Tools that run in your browser

Merging, splitting, rotating, reordering pages, converting images to PDF and most image editing all happen inside the browser tab you already have open. Your document is opened by code running on your own machine, and the result is written back to your downloads folder. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.

That has two consequences worth understanding. The first is privacy: there is no upload to intercept, no copy sitting on a server, and no retention policy to take on trust, because the file never left the room. The second is speed. A fifty megabyte scan does not need to travel to a server and back, so the work finishes in about the time it takes to read this paragraph.

Tools that need a server

Some jobs cannot be done in a browser. Optical character recognition, real compression that re-encodes every embedded image, conversion to Word or Excel, and PDF/A archiving all depend on substantial software that has to run somewhere else. Those tools say so on the page before you upload anything.

When a file does go to our server, it is used for the conversion you asked for and deleted the moment the result is returned. It is not stored, not logged, not indexed and not used to train anything. Every server response carries a header stating that the file was not retained, so the claim is checkable rather than merely asserted.

Every tool is free and none of them add a watermark or require an account. There is no paid tier holding back the useful features, no page limit, and no queue to skip. If a tool works, it works completely.
