About PDF Metadata
PDF Metadata shows the hidden document properties inside a PDF — author, title, subject, the software that produced it and the creation and modification dates — then lets you rewrite them or clear them entirely before you send the file on.
PDF metadata is filled in automatically and almost never reviewed. The author field usually holds whatever name was configured in the program that created the document, which is frequently a real full name or a corporate username. The title field commonly retains the original filename rather than the document's actual title, which is how a CV sent to an employer can arrive announcing itself as 'draft-cv-v4-final-actually-final'.
The producer and creator fields identify the software and version used, and the timestamps record exactly when the file was made and last changed. Individually these are trivial. Together they say more than most senders intend: that a contract was amended at two in the morning, that a supposedly bespoke proposal was produced from the same template minutes before sending, or that an anonymous submission came from a named person's machine.
This is a routine source of accidental disclosure in legal and journalistic contexts, which is why document management systems scrub metadata before anything goes out. For everyone else it takes a few seconds and needs doing at the point of sending, because once the file has left, the copy on the other end retains everything.
How to remove metadata from a PDF
- Drop your PDF in — it is read locally, not uploaded.
- Review the fields to see what the document is currently disclosing.
- Either edit individual fields, or click Strip everything to blank them all.
- Download the resulting PDF.
- Send the cleaned copy rather than the original.
Tips & common problems
Stripping clears the dates too
Blanking the author while leaving a creation timestamp still reveals when you worked on a document. Strip everything resets the dates as well.
Metadata is not page content
This changes document properties only. Text inside the pages is untouched — to remove visible content permanently, use the Redact tool instead.
Check the title field on anything you send out
It very often still holds the original filename, complete with version numbers and internal naming. It is the single most commonly leaked field.
Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first
A password-protected file cannot be read until the password is removed. Run it through the Unlock PDF tool, then come back here.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded to your server?
No. The file is opened, edited and saved entirely in your browser, which is what makes this appropriate for confidential contracts and CVs.
What information does a PDF store about me?
Typically the author name, document title, subject and keywords, the creating and producing software with version numbers, and the creation and modification timestamps. None of it is visible on the page.
Does removing metadata change the document's content?
No. The pages, text, images and layout are untouched. Only the document property fields and dates change.
Can the removed metadata be recovered?
Not from the file you download — the fields are genuinely cleared rather than hidden. Your original file still has them, so keep or delete it as you prefer.
Why does the producer field reappear after saving?
Most PDF libraries stamp their own name when writing a file. This tool explicitly clears that field after saving, so stripping leaves it genuinely empty rather than substituting a new one.
Will this work on a password-protected PDF?
Not directly — an encrypted file cannot be read without its password. Remove the password with the Unlock PDF tool first, then edit its metadata here.
