About Remove Background
Remove Background uses an AI segmentation model to identify the subject of your photo and cut it away from everything behind it, returning a PNG with a transparent background. Remarkably, the model runs inside your browser rather than on a server, so your photos are never uploaded.
This used to be skilled work. Cutting a subject out by hand in Photoshop meant tracing edges with the pen tool and then spending longer again on hair, which is where every amateur attempt falls apart. A competent manual cutout was twenty minutes of concentration, and paying a retoucher for a batch of product shots was a genuine line item for small businesses.
The applications are everywhere once you have it. Marketplace sellers want products on clean white backgrounds because listings convert better. Anyone building a slide deck wants a person or object to sit on their own layout rather than in a rectangle of someone else's carpet. Profile pictures, logos over photographs, product mockups and printed materials all need transparency. That the model runs locally matters more than it sounds — photographs of people, homes and merchandise are exactly the images you would rather not hand to a third-party server.
How to Remove Background

Tips & common problems
Contrast between subject and background does the work
A person against a plain wall cuts out almost perfectly. The same person against a busy patterned background with similar colours is where the model struggles most.
The first run downloads the model
Expect a wait of several seconds the first time while the AI model is fetched into your browser. Subsequent images are much faster.
Save as PNG, never JPG
JPG cannot store transparency and will fill your carefully removed background with solid white. Keep the PNG, and only convert later if you have placed it on a background.
Hair and fur are the hard cases
Fine strands are difficult for any automatic tool. Results are usually good, but for a hero image on a printed brochure it is worth checking closely at full zoom.
