Pixelate Image replaces a region with large blocks of averaged colour, producing the mosaic effect used to censor faces and sensitive details. The block size is adjustable, and the effect is written into the exported file rather than layered over it. It runs in your browser.

Pixelation and blurring hide the same information but communicate differently. A blur can look like a camera problem; a mosaic is unmistakably deliberate. That is why broadcast journalism, court reporting and documentary photography lean on pixelation — it tells the viewer that something has been withheld on purpose, which is a statement blurring does not clearly make.

It carries a warning worth taking seriously, though. Light pixelation of predictable content can be reversed. If you mosaic a six-digit code with small blocks, software can generate every possible value, pixelate each one the same way, and match the pattern — recovering the original in seconds. This has caught out people who pixelated card numbers and passwords believing them safe. For anything short and guessable, use blocks large enough that the region is a single flat colour, or cover it entirely.

Never rely on it for credentials

Card numbers, passwords and API keys should be cropped out or covered with a solid block, not obscured. Some things should not be in a shared image at all.

Cover generously

Pixelating exactly a face leaves hair, clothing and posture intact, which can still identify someone in context. Extend the region a little wider than feels necessary.
